Revenge is So SWEET
The United States Women’s Soccer Team defeated the defending World Cup champions from 2011 Japan in a 5-2 slaughter this past weekend. This championship match was dominated by the U.S from start to finish. The U.S. was going into the match with heavy determination and focus knowing that fours years ago they let the Gold medal slip away from them in penalty kicks. This year they gave the Japanese women no hope , scoring four goals in the first sixteen minutes of the match. Carli Lloyd scored 3 goals within that first sixteen minutes, scoring the fastest hat trick in World Cup History men’s or women’s. One of Lloyd’s three goals was a shot from midfield that was truly amazing. Lloyd won the tournament Golden Ball award, which is given to the best player in the World Cup. She tied for the most goals in the tournament with six.
The U.S was a superior team through out the W.C only giving up three goals through the entire tournament, credit to the U.S defensive presence lead by the best goalie in the world Hope Solo. Solo has been through a roller coaster ride on and off the pitch leading up to the W.C, with a domestic violence case,30 – day suspension, and her husband’s DUI. Through it all Solo delivered a dominate performance through out the entire tournament. She leaves Canada with the Golden Glove Award given to the best goal keeper in the tournament.
This was the first W.C victory for the U.S. Women since the historic win in 1999. No other country has won the W.C three times. (U.S. 1991, 1999, 2015)The match on Sunday was the most watch in W.C history whether men’s or women’s with 25.4 million viewers. More viewers equals more opportunity to get young girls to play soccer and gives the sport opportunity to grow in the U.S. After this victory the U.S. Soccer team definitely received more fans. There is much promise for the sport of soccer in the U.S. both men’s and women’s. We like winners here in the U.S. so the men’s soccer teams has to bring it like the women brought it this year. Congrats to the champs.
