Magie Noire est La Vie

Art, to hear the word many would instantly think of thousands of colors falling onto a canvas, paint dipped brushes, a constantly sketching pencil, a voice soulfully singing, or a bodies rhythmic sway. And yet there is one form of art that is often overlooked, but encompasses all that were mentioned before. The missing link is “magie noire” or as most would say, black art.

Art is defined as, the quality, production, expression, or realm, according to aesthetic principles, of what is beautiful, appealing, or of more than ordinary significance.”

Looking at the end of the definition it can be determined what has blocked black art from mainstream society. The black body is not considered to be “classically beautiful,” and so it is not shared.

This is not to say black art doesn’t exist and does not mean there are a lack of black artist, but simply saying art that allows for the adoration and appreciation of the black body and the black perspective to give a sense of a true America is missing. Because we are not considered to be of “more than ordinary significance”. The series of photos that follow, some borrowed from The Human Gallery, depicts the black body in its full glory. Magie Noire est La Vie = Black Art is Life

Keep it lite, love it black, because in the real world sometimes it has to be like that.
